The values that belong to daydreaming mark humanity in its depths
Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space
Occupation was developed over the summer of 2008 within the Birr Union Workhouse as part of About 100 Experiments curated by Eilís Lavelle. The work involved creating poetic writings and sound pieces while resident in the attic of the workhouse. These pieces were edited and installed for display within a ground floor room in the workhouse during Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival.. The central exploration of this residency and display was the concept of occupation. The texts developed were collated in a portfolio propped upon a cobbled together display structure made from found furniture and wood in the Workhouse. Ambient and spoken-word recordings made in the workhouse were sounded through repurposed objects, a street-lamp and an old crate.
